Dolores Claiborne – Stephen King

“Dolores has a story to tell but not quite what the Police had expected… Dolores has a confession to make, she has a story to tell, she will take her time telling the truth, nothing but and you’d better pay attention – or else!”

This is okay tbf, not one of King’s best but still pretty good. It’s one of those rare books that has no chapter breaks, it’s just one large continuous chapter from start to finish though that shouldn’t put anyone off from reading this.

Written in Blood – Chris Carter

This is the latest in his Detective Hunter collection and, though these books are pretty good (the ones I’ve read) they are all similar in plot so I’d previously told myself I’d not be reading any more of them but after spotting this in a charity shop for £1 I couldn’t resist😎😂

“Angela Evans, the expert pickpocket that she is, steals a bag from the wrong person. Horrified at its contents it ends up on the desk of Rob Hunter who is then on the trail of another serial killer but one who wants his bag back!”

This, just like every Chris Carter book I’ve read (only five tho) is very good. Intriguing and enthralling, it keeps the reader interested throughout and a little disappointed when it’s over. IMO this latest offering is one of his better ones alongside An Evil Mind.

The Crucifix Killer – Chris Carter

Not to be confused with the chap who created the X Files!!

This is his debut novel that introduces us to harden Detective Robert Hunter, the cop all serial killers love to hate who takes no shit from anybody (including his superiors) When Hunter has a hunch he follows it regardless which doesn’t always work out in his favour.

Victims begin appearing, each with a double crucifix carved into their neck and Hunter is given the case even though an innocent man was charged in the last murder case that he worked on.

This was Pretty Ok. Definitely worth reading but most of his Hunter books that followed are of similar plot and storyline (read others first) so it’s probably best to stick with this first one or “An Evil Mind” which is arguably his best Hunter book.

Pretty Good!

The Silent Patient – Alex Michaelides

Found this book in a charity shop, liked the cover, intrigued by the synopsis so Twas a Sale!

“Alicia Berenson lived a seemingly normal life until one day six years ago when she shot her husband in the head five times. Since then she hasn’t spoken a single word and now it’s time to find out why”

Ok. This is a pretty decent read, it keeps you guessing, enthralled at what will be next but then you get to the twist ending and think “OH!” Can’t say much more without spoiling it but this author certainly knows how to nullify a shock twist ending!

The Woman in Cabin 10

The second offering from author Ruth Ware after her debut thriller In the Dark Dark Wood.

“A passenger is missing but was she ever on board at all?” Yes! I hear you all cry, it sounds exactly like The Lady Vanishes and so far it is. Journalist Lo Blacklock is aboard the Aurora cruise ship when she hears a scream from the next door cabin followed by what she thinks is a body thrown into the sea but there is no record of anyone staying in that cabin except… Lo met her the previous day!

I’m just interested to see where this one goes though I’m not expecting a classic!!

Well… it’s no classic but Twas better than I expected Thanks to the twist ending. Still not as good as her Turn of the Key but better than her Dark Wood debut this is a pretty decent thriller even though most of the storyline is predictable.

In a Dark Dark Wood – Ruth Ware

After enjoying The Turn of the Key I decided to backtrack through her catalogue and read her novels from the very beginning so I now find myself immersed in the dark woods…

For a debut novel this was disappointing!! If it had been the first book of hers I’d read it would’ve been the last! A tiny cast, a weak storyline and a pathetic ending all equates to a Very Poor Debut. If you’re thinking of reading any of this authors work you’d do well to avoid this one.
