Blackbird (Tv series)

Based on a true story, this six episode series, exclusive to Apple TV mainly concentrates on two characters, Jimmy Keene and Larry Hall. Jimmy is living a decent life with the finances from his drug smuggling until one day, after an anonymous tip off, the police raid his flat, find his unconscious girlfriend lying amongst a large stock of cocaine and Jimmy is immediately put in custody. After his lawyer gives him false information about a plea that Jimmy agrees to he gets given a ten year sentence. A few months into his sentence Jimmy is approached by the FBI with an opportunity to have his sentence quashed but he’s got to do a job for them first, a job that involves being transferred to a more secure facility and getting friendly with a suspected serial killer but if he fails, he stays there.

Very Gripping!

The Mask – Dean Koontz

One of his earlier books I’ve not read until now, his earlier ones are his best ones IMO. “She had appeared out of nowhere… in the middle of traffic, on a busy day, in front of Carol’s car. She was a teenager with no past, no family and no memories. Carol and husband Paul were instantly drawn to her, this girl they named Jane, she was the daughter they never had. It was almost too good to be true. Then the hauntings began. Where had Jane come from? Was she just an orphan in need of love? Was she hiding a more sinister purpose? Who was the girl behind the mask?“

To say this is predictable would be akin to asking “Does a bear shit in the woods!” but that predictability aside, this is still pretty good. I was a little disappointed with the ending as it’s much more sudden and immediate than I expected but, like most of his other earlier work that I’ve read, it’s much better than his later stuff.

Sizzling Horror!

The Cabin in the Woods – Sarah Alderson

Know nothing about this author but the title and cover seemed enough to reel me in! “In the middle of nowhere, there’s no one to hear you scream! A woman hides in a small cabin in the woods. Paranoid and afraid. She fears the night, fears what’s done in the dark will come to light. She must keep running to escape the lies else she could be the next to die”

It’s Okay. Rose, a woman who marries into wealth (the usual shallowness that most women have) gives herself to her billionaire husband Ryan Reid only to find that, aside from his aspirations for the DA’s office he’s hiding deadly secrets. Now, desperate and on the run after a supposed murder she’s hiding out in a friend’s cabin and with very few people she can trust, Rose has to hope that the truth comes out before she gets discovered.

The Paris Apartment – Lucy Foley

Unlock the mystery. Only you hold the key. Picked this one up for a Bargain 50p!! This is My Lucy Foley debut.

“Welcome to No.12 rue des Amants. A beautiful old apartment block, deep in the back streets of Montmartre where nothing goes unseen and everyone has a story to unlock. The watchful concierge, the scorned lover, the prying journalist, the naive student, the unwanted guest. There was a murder here. A mystery lies behind the door of apartment three but… Who holds the key??!!”

Yeah it’s Okay. Intriguing but a slow burner. Jess, the family tear away gets an invite from her older brother Ben to come stay at his new plush apartment in Paris. Though it’s been years since she last saw him, finding their mother dead in her bedroom whilst he was away travelling around Europe with his friends, she feels it’s time for them to reconcile but, after a suspicious voice message from Ben, she arrives at the complex only to find his apartment empty and she sets out to find him with help only from people she doesn’t know if she can trust.

Pretty Intriguing!

The Dark – Sharon Bolton

This is my favourite female author with the latest instalment of her Lacey Flint series so it’s a Must Read for me… “The girl on the cliff top, the one he must now learn to think of as Lacey Flint, had once been a bad but distant memory. They should have left Beachy Head together. He believed that She belonged to him and this time, well, this time was going to be different. This time, she wasn’t going to get away”

This is Bloody Superb! YMRT(You Must Read This) With many recalls to the first book in the series “Now You See Me” which, from my limited memory left questions unanswered well, those are now answered, the constant “Will they Won’t they” between Lacey & Joesbury finally reaches its climax (no pun intended) and it ends very well with the possibility of another in the series. The only disappointing thing for me was that I guessed the main twist pretty early on but it didn’t detract my enjoyment of the book one single iota. I was Utterly Engrossed. What would be nice is a prequel novel of Lacey Flint’s early years before she/Victoria joined the met and the events that led to the Beachy Head epilogue of this book. So, if you’re reading this Sharon, that’s a very good thing to keep in mind but this book is SO GOOD. It’s a Definite Must Read 😎👍🏻

BLOODY SUPERB 😎👍🏻

Suspicion (AppleTV)

Very recently watched this series thanks to a three month free trial of AppleTV and I can tell you all that it’s Bloody Brilliant!!

It’s the first time in ages that I’ve watched a series without knowing any plots but it was so engrossing from early on in the first episode that I binge watched it, all eight episodes within a 48 hour period (That’s my Binge watch limits!) and I just didn’t want it to end, so hoping there is a second series but YMWT (You Must Watch This!)

The Funhouse – Dean Koontz

I’ve been after this one for some time and finally sourced a copy from a local second hand bookshop. I’ll be entering the funhouse in the very near future… Been in. Safely Out. Yes, this is pretty good, much of his earlier work is better IMO. Though it’s quite short for Koontz it grabs you early on and keeps hold until the very end. “The Carnival is a world apart, endlessly travelling from town to town, providing thrills and magic for kids every week and the biggest, most popular attraction is The Funhouse. Young Amy Harper is the loveliest girl at her school but, to her, life seems wretched. Terrorised by her mother’s nights of drink and drunken confessions Amy knows her little brother Joey is her only real friend and when the carnival comes to town, they plan to escape his troubled home and join the revellers but Amy and Joey soon fall under the carnival spell, unaware that their mother’s secrets are buried here and that vengeance for past deeds lies in wait for them in the make believe world of… The Funhouse”

Prophecy – Peter James

Another of his standalone Supernatural thrillers, this one a lucky find at a local thrift store and currently reading alongside his “House on Cold Hill. “Drunk students mess with a Ouija board in a damp cellar. A sadistic man dies in agony. A young boy watches his mother die. Can bricks and mortar retain imprints of the emotions experienced within them? Young Frannie is delighted when a chance meeting leads to romance but the relationship is marred by past tragedies. She dismisses them as unsettling coincidence but, eventually, she can no longer ignore the fact that she is the only thing linking these horrible events”

This is Pretty Good. Took me time with it even though it’s quite a short one (360 pages) but it’s just your usual “spirit of evil contaminates another body” story which are ten a penny these days though this guy usually concentrates more on crime fiction than horror which is very noticeable comparing his writing to that of an authentic horror fiction author but it’s still a fun read.

When Life turns to Nightmare!

The House on Cold Hill – Peter James

I’ve not read any of his “Roy Grace” series as I expect they’re much the same as any other crime series but I do enjoy his standalone novels (especially his supernatural) of which this is one and I always love a good Haunted House story so I’m now on my way to Cold Hill 😷😎👍🏻

Really enjoyed this haunted house story. It isn’t repetitive like some of them are, it’s pretty short (just over 300 pages) but very to the point and it keeps you intrigued right until the very end.

“The Dead can’t hurt you… can they?!”
