Trial & Retribution – Lynda LaPlante

I loved the Tv series, some were better than others but overall Twas very good so when I saw that this had recently been re-published I just had to give it a try, in fact it’s my LaPlante debut!

It’s Very Good. Keeps you guessing all the way, feeling the pressure and stress that Chief Walker and D I North find themselves under during the investigation into the murder of five year old Julie Ann Harris. A suspect, local drunk Michael Dunn, is vocally accused by members of the community but a lack of evidence is a big problem unless he is in fact innocent of the crime but Julie’s stepfather, Peter James, is known to have a violent temper and is not written off so, can Walker bring justice to Julie’s family?

Thrilling Drama!

Something Wicked this way comes – Ray Bradbury

This is a classic, isn’t it? Like a lot of his books and short stories are? Or so I’ve heard but, until now, I’d not read any of his work even though I’ve been interested in doing so for some time so I decided Twas time to maybe a start with this.

I’m a fan of Carnival Horror, King’s Joyland and Koontz’s The Funhouse are amongst me favourites though it was definitely time to try what has regularly been described as “An all time Classic” so I did. I’m not in the group agreeing to this being a classic, it’s okay, maybe a little bit better than just okay but I’m not gonna be in a rush to recommend this as much as Joyland or The Funhouse but I’d say it’s one that you’ve probably gotta read if you’re a legitimate fan of horror fiction. Not really for me but I’m sure it is for many others.

Carnival Horror!

The House at Phantom Park – Graham Masterton

One of the horror titles hat was Free to read on kindle so, why not give it a go? Yeah, it’s okay. Just as the other “Haunted House” book I’ve read of this author “House of a hundred whispers” this book has a pretty poor ending.

In this abandoned hospital, pain lives on and it wants revenge but Lillian Chesterfield, an employee of one of England’s most successful building companies is in charge of its development just three years after its abandonment but soon after she and her colleagues start work in this Jacobean style mansion, their dream turns into a nightmare. Screaming emanates from wards full of empty beds, doors on all floors slamming and cutlery scatters over the kitchen floor, then they see the faces…

A Meditation on Murder – Robert Thorogood

A Death in Paradise Mystery!

This is the first book in the Death in Paradise series of books based on the popular Tv series. This debut centres around the death of Aslan Kennedy, leader of a spiritually retreat on the island of Saint Marie, living an idyllic life with his wife of 15 years with seemingly not a single worry in the world until that is he’s found brutally murdered in a locked room. Although five other people were present when his body was discovered, none of them saw or heard his killer and all of them swear their innocence. However, DI Richard Poole soon discovers that everyone has secrets but can he fathom whom is most desperate to have their dark secret kept?

The Killing of Polly Carter – Robert Thorogood.

A Death in Paradise Mystery!

Absolutely love the show so taking these on was a stonewall no brainer! I started with this one, the third in the series, though I’m pretty sure it doesn’t matter which order they are read in.

Obviously it’s not a serious thriller, it’s very light hearted in line with the show but it’s still very enjoyable. This one centres on Polly Carter, a world famous model who is found dead at the bottom of a cliff face in what was at first presumed an intended suicide but Detective Richard Poole, on edge with the imminent arrival of his mother to Saint Marie, is more inclined to believe she was murdered!

A Thrilling Treat!

A Cosmology of Monsters – Shaun Hamill

Heard a lot of reviews about this book, mostly good and it even has an “apparent” recommendation from the master of horror himself with King saying “I loved it, I think you will too!” and he’s always a good guide to listen to so I did, luckily finding a copy of this for only 50p!

I really enjoyed this. It’s not really horror but it is at times pretty horrific. Unlike most horror that I’ve read it’s pretty heartwarming too, a proper coming of age story full of happiness, sadness, laughter and tragedy and a few scares, combined almost perfectly to give us this very enjoyable cosmology.

Horror with a twist?!

The Whisper Man – Alex North

“If you leave the door half open, soon you’ll hear the whispers spoken…”

Found myself a copy of this not long after I’d heard a few good reviews about it so gonna get started on this soon. Ok, done with this now and it is pretty good, not the best crime novel of the decade, far from it but it’s definitely worth reading especially if you like a good serial killer thriller.

“After the death of wife & mother Rebecca Kennedy, Tom Kennedy and his son Jake move to a new area in the hope of a fresh start. Unknown to Tom, his new house has a history, a very nasty history which, through the help of Jake’s imaginary friend, seemingly his only friend soon begins to invade their lives. Local Detective Pete Willis is still haunted by the heinous crimes committed by Frank Carter even though he’s been imprisoned for years and spends all his spare time avoiding the demon drink by remembering what he has lost and It’s not long before tragic circumstances bring Tom and Pete together”

“Can you hear the whispers?!“
